Main Assignment

Melbourne is a vibrant city in the state of Victoria. Unlike the other cities, Melbourne is popular and can attract alot of attention through sites located all around the heart of the city. But it is not all about the main buildings and functions though. The alleys throughout the city also have alot of life, whether it be full of small cafes, restaurants or bakeries to the iconic Hosier Lane full of graffiti. These hidden lanes really give Melbourne a story to tell and today I will bring that story to you.

A great starting point for any newcomer to Melbourne is Federation Square. This is a historic site, which was built when the federation occurred. From this site you are able to see Flinders Street Station, where most of the population in and around the CBD travel to to set off on the journey either for work or to have fun. The reason Federation Square is a good starting point is because you are able to see most of the popular sites around the central part of Melbourne. These sites include Hosier Lane, The Shrine, The National Gallery of Victoria and The Arts Centre. Moving to Hosier Lane, the famous graffiti lane, would be the next best thing to see. From here you are able to see creative graffiti art, which has been sprayed onto the walls for years and years, piling over the top of each. Recently a graffiti art piece reading "RIP Jill Meagher" was sprayed onto the walls of Hosier Lane, which was in memorial of the death of Jill Meagher. This goes to show how people across Melbourne can connect to each other through something as simple as graffiti.

Next moving along Collins street you will pass little lanes that are all famous to the city such as AC/DC lane, which is dedicated to the famous band ACDC and Degraves Street which is filled with cafes and bakeries that can entertain you and or friends or simply relax and have a nice coffee. Located south of Flinders Street is alot of popular and historic sites, the furthest being The Shrine of Remembrance which was built for the fallen soliders and army personal who have fought in wars such as WW1, WW2, The Vietnam war and many others which is a shame. Inside you are able to enter the room of the two soliders. This is a father son statue in which represents the father fighting in WW1 and the son fighting in WW2. In this room you are also able to view the battalion flags and see which battles they fought in. At a certain time during the day you can experience the 'Last Post' played in memory of the fallen soliders. I have experienced this myself and it was very special to attend.

Heading further north you will come across statues representing famous characters such as Sir Weary Dunlop. Also you will be passing a hidden museum called the Australian Centre of Contemporary Art. This museum shows of art that is different and abstract to most of the art you could be use to such as paintings or sculptures. Moving past this you will run into the Arts Centre. This site can attract alot of tourists due to the long tower that rises above pretty high in the sky. This site shows off performances of acts and popular screen plays but it can also show movies just like a normal cinema. When exiting the Arts centre you should get a good view of the Eureaka tower and The Rialto. These are the two tallest buildings in Melbourne and if your are lucky enough to come to Melbourne during New Years, you will see a spectacular firework display being launched off the tops of these to towers. Lighting up the entire city.

Moving back closer to the heart of Melbourne you can drop on in into Chinatown. This is the home of the Chinese community in Melbourne and has been part of the city since the very start of the goldrush when alot of foreigners migrated to Australia to try and strike gold. Alot of historic buildings still remain to this date and to explore and journey through the entire Chinatown it would be advised to take a tour from the people at the Chinese Museum.

Overall the city of Melbourne is a magical place full of beautiful places and sites all to be enjoyed by the cities people. If you are arriving into Melbourne and are reading this A+ standard blog then I recommend that you go and visit the places I have listed above if you are looking to have a great and happy time in a new country
